Gusset Plate Roof Rafters

For all but the very largest buildings use two by sixes for the rafters and center post and two by fours for the cross tie and the other compression members.

Attach plywood triangle gusset to the truss with 6d common 2 long nails installed every 3. Lean to rafters then connect to a ledger board against a wall of another shed or house. Once they are connected at the right place then place your plywood piece over the two boards and trace out an outline for the gusset to hang over and attach the boards together as in the diagram above. Use rectangular plates to connect bottom chords and braces making sure they cover the joint with enough overlap on each frame member to fasten it securely.

Fasten them with plywood gussets glued and screwed on. Pictured at left is a 2x6 rafter spliced together using 3 4 plywood. Do not use sheet metal mending plates even though they look like the kind of plates that hold commercial trusses together. Get metal gussets sized to the slope and shape of the truss.

You could also use structural screws if that s easier for you. In this case the framer just needed a longer rafter. Position the bottom chord and rafters along the floor will they will be located. In this case the rafter as a whole is actually stronger than it would have been because the splice is more than adequate and the plywood adds to the strength.
